EASY TIP to Fixing Forward Lean (Posture) - YouTubeThe Lean of Forward We recently had four inches of snow in Washington, not much, actually, but enough to stop the city. The cold climate that breaks the record, even teenagers and even individual digits, has accompanied the snow, so it has been stuck for a while. Right, we wouldn't have noticed this time when we lived in northeast Minnesota, but it brings a longing for the winters there. My memories of cross-country skiing through the woods near our house are among my happiest. The city was beautiful, though. Marja and I stretched our regular night walk for up to an hour, enjoying the snow hats in the bushes of labranza, the empty streets, the wind turning through the main hall of our local business area, a house with Christmas tree lights still in the pine in its front yard, and the occasional person fighting the wind and the cold. When the temperature is so low, the snow becomes crispy, evoking memories of Finnish winter walks where we also live for some time. When it's cold, the snow is no longer slippery, nice for an old man whose balance is not what it used to be. It was absolutely glorious to be in the quiet city. As we walked, however, I noticed that he continued to lean forward. Marja noticed, too. We always walk quickly to get the exercise, as well as our night union, but on Tuesday night, I almost couldn't help speeding up. Involuntarily I leaned forward, and my legs seemed to be rushing to reach my upper body, which seemed to be dragging my legs. I got out of a curb and I almost fell off the street. I didn't fall, but only because Marja and I often have hands, both for balance and for tenderness. Before I realized my cognitive decline, I would have barely noticed an isolated case like this. However, with my deficiency, my medical mind lit up, and I immediately thought of Parkinson's disease. One of his signs is a "fessional holiday", which is an image I have of the medical school: a guy pulled faster and faster by his upper body. Parkinson is often a cause of dementia, too. Naturally, I looked for him when we got home. It turns out, however, that my bet didn't really meet the criteria to be festinative. He had forgotten the other elements that he understands: screwed position; short stirrup, absence of an arm oscillation; difficulty to begin and stop; etc. It also turns out that a festive gait does not appear late in Parkinson when many other symptoms would have become obvious. The mental leap to think about my deficiency is understandable, I guess. My diagnosis is uncertain, the different diseases have different prognosis, and I am a doctor with a natural curiosity. But I also wonder if it is an unhealthy concern with the future. In the months following my diagnosis, I felt a wonderful freedom of concern for the future. I lived more in the present, more in tune with others and with the world in general. It was wonderful. Some of that's left. On the other hand, I find myself now, twelve months later, a little less in tune with others, more often concerned with the past and the future. Are you thinking of Parkinson a "preoccupation" or something less neurotic? I don't feel worried about the future, mostly interested in it. It is a mental challenge to gather all my symptoms and test results, and ask yourself about the different futures. So I don't feel very worried. In any case, this is my present moment. I wonder what's going on now, even wondering about my future is what I'm doing right now. And the present moment is where I want to live.
